Registration for the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon has closed
Just six days after registration opened for the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, more than 45,000 runners applied for entry hitting the event's capacity. As we noted earlier this week, the race took just 31 days to sell out last year. If you want to get in now you'll have to do so through the Bank of America Chicago Marathon Charity Program or International Tour Group Program.

This is mega-crazy
and shows the trend of races filling up even faster getting even more steam. I’m going to have to choose my races carefully in the future and be sure that I sign up as soon as they’re available, regardless of the race.

it's part of a pretty clear trend
running is growing more and more popular and more people are entering these big prestigious races as a result.
it used to be that only people into marathoning would run because of the apparent limitation of the times. that changed with the emergence of the large-scale all comers races that were open longer and, as a result, vastly widened their market base (and made a lot more money). eventually, more of these runners got good enough to finish in the more abbreviated time window of the prestigious races and started entering them.
then, add in the sentiment you just expressed about getting in early to be sure and you get shockingly abbreviated registration periods. at this point, the market is in control. one of three things has to change: the capacity of the race, the price of the entry or the restrictions on entry.
