The University of Colorado men' cross country team claimed the program's fourth NCAA national championship this weekend on a freezing, windy day at the LaVerne Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Buffs, ranked No. 3 going into the weekend, now have six overall cross country titles along with two women's titles, all coming under coach Mark Wetmore.
To claim the title, the Buffs downed a field of 30 teams that included No. 1-ranked Northern Arizona who had defeated Colorado by eight points a week prior at the regional meet. Defending champion Oklahoma State were the second ranked team.
Providence claimed the women's cross country title with a dominant performance in the 6,000 meter race. The Friars finished second last year and the national championship is their first since 1995.
Oregon freshman Edward Cheserek claimed the men's individual title launched in part by an 18-second victory over defending champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech in the 10,000 meter race. Darmouth's Abbey D'Agostino earned her fifth NCAA title but her first in cross country as she brought her college career to a close.
