Pollen is controlling the world. How'd your runs go in spite of the green air monster?
Mayo: 11 miles total. Started back up this week 'con hesitance'. Three runs, one with one of our dogs.
- Tuesday: 3 miles (8:22 pace). Not a bad run, though in my angst I managed to build the run up into something more than it really was. Was nervous as hell when I started, and my stomach never really settled. Also: the first run in a week apparently induces the poops. Good to get back out, not a great experience.
- Friday: 1 mile (7:53 pace). Took out our Jack Russell for a spin around the Capitol. He's not used to pacing real well, and started running pretty hard once we turned around back towards home. We're planning to run him a few times a week, and hopefully I can start building his mileage up over the course of the summer.
- Sunday: 7 miles (9:36 pace). Beautiful day, though a bit sunny for my liking. No real respite from the sun to be found. Legs held up pretty well, and it felt fantastic to get out and go for an hour.
Next week: Hoping for four runs of intermediate length. Still playing things by ear w/r/t how my legs feel. Would like to be around 20 miles for the week, but can't guarantee anything.
Hudson: Another unorganized, kind of weird week -- couple of swims, couple of runs, but no real plan.
-
Monday: 1500 yards in the pool (600 warm-up, 3x300 at test-pace)
-
Thursday: 55 minutes on the bike indoors
-
Friday: 1100 yards in the pool (warmed-up, then did a quick 3x100 at a fast pace)
-
Saturday: 8 miles, 8:30 pace. The first three miles were ... slow. And I did not want to be out there. But an iPhone switch from a depressing podcast to music helped pick things up for the final five miles (including a 7:20 mile 7).
-
Sunday: Recovery run: 3 miles at a 9:00 pace.
Eventually I will actually figure out my training schedule. Right?
fun week of running
Tuesday: 5 miles. Some ‘light’ hills and a tribute run to Michah True. It was great hearing stories about him from the several in our group who knew him.
Thursday: 4 miles. Nice and easy stretch out run before the race on Saturday. We hosted a runner from Japan who went on to win and set the course record for the women’s 50 miler. Had fun taking her through the creek crossings and to some of the other sight seeing spots for photos. Here she is receiving her winner’s trophy after the race:
Saturday: 50 mile race. 9 hours, 37 minutes. Now I feel like I’ve actually run an ultra. 50k runs are tough for sure, but 50 miles seems like the bare minimum for an ultra proper. Stayed on my hydration and fuel the entire time and the heat only really got to me during the last 10 miles (the temps were between low 60s and low 80s for the race and the average humidity was 70%). I am very happy with the result as a first attempt.
Field of flowers we passed through:
The last manned aid station workers were a lot of fun. The sign below greeted you on your 3 third loop after at least an hour of stumbling through the heat.
Not listed was the best item available: popsicle. Mine was root beer and it was unicorn tears.

Working through some back pain
What I thought was an SI Joint problem might just be a bulging disc, brought on by travel and fatigue last week. I’m doing some exercises to try to help the problem and I’m going to try to do some stim a couple of times this week.
No running this week
Monday: 1 hour easy cycling on the trainer (16 miles +/-)
Tuesday: 2200 meters swim (40 minute workout)
Wednesday: Nothing
Thursday: 3000 meter swim(50 minute workout)
Friday: 30 miles cycling with the wife (15.8 mph pace)
Saturday: 30 minute weight/cardio circuit at Planet Fitness, 3200 yard swim (50 minutes workout)
Sunday: 38 miles cycling (19.4 mph pace)
I am hoping to get back into at least doing some short runs this week. Very frustrating to go from 25 + miles per week of running to 0 miles per week running. Very fortunate that I can still swim and cycle without pain.

Last week was kind of a washout
1.5 miles on Monday and 3 on Wednesday with a bunch of leg problems:
What felt like a sprained left ankle
lots of pain in the muscle outside the left shin, where I have a big varicose vein
Gout flare-up in my left big toe.
The varicose vein problems were really bothering me in January, and I took the month off due to a more standard case of shinsplints on my right leg.
I’m sort of thinking a lot of my problems this week were tied to to the gout attack — during a bad one it seems like my foot really swells up and pulls all the muscles in my leg tighter (I could feel tightness as high up as my hip as I was sitting at the Orioles game on Friday, when the flare-up was at its peak) — and probably made worse by dehydration from trying to drink like a 22 year old last weekend.
Got 5 miles in yesterday with the only problem being all the pollen, so I think I’m ok now. I’ve got 10K races this coming weekend and the following. I don’t think they’ll be great, but as long as I feel as decent as I did yesterday I know I can finish the distance.
