The Prefontaine Classic, named after Steve Prefontaine, perhaps the greatest American distance runner ever, is set for its 39th annual edition this weekend at the historic Hayward Field in Oregon, beginning Friday with "Distance Night in Eugene." The Pre Classic, part of the IAAF Diamond League, is the longest-running outdoor invitational track and field meet in the country.
NBC Sports will broadcast live on Saturday, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. ET, and then NBC will pick up the event and air it live until 6 p.m. A live webcast will also be available at http://preclassic.runnerspace.com/.
The meet begins Friday night with the Women's Hammer Throw and then reaches its climax in the Men's 10,000m, featuring Kenenisa Bekele -- the world record holder -- Kenya's Geoffrey Kipsang and six of the top-10 ranked athletes in the world. However, it will no longer include the much-anticipated showdown between Bekele and Mo Farah, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, after Farah was forced to switch to the 5,000m because of a nagging stomach virus.
Farah's move to Saturday's 5,000m means he'll be running in a field with teammate Galen Rupp, American record holder Bernard Lagat and Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Longosiwa. So not a bad consolation.
Saturday's slate also features the men's 100m and 200m races, headlined by Americans Justin Gatlin and Walter Dix, respectively. Here's the complete entry/start lists for the weekend's events.
