Ironman 70.3 St. Croix Results: Andy Potts Wins, Lance Armstrong Finishes Third

New, 7 comments

American Andy Potts won the 2012 Ironman 70.3 St. Croix triathlon race on a rainy, overcast Sunday morning, finishing in a time of 4:03:41. Stephane Poulat (France) finished second (4:05:25) and Lance Armstrong came in third (4:07:08).

As usual, Potts was the first out of the water -- he was a six-time NCAA All-American swimmer at Michigan -- and was followed closely by Poulat. Armstrong was 1:23 behind heading into the first transition, but once he was on the bike, he took control.

The seven-time Tour de France winner not only caught the leaders, but grabbed the race lead around mile 45 of the 56-mile bike ride. He left T2 with a 1:45 advantage on Potts, but that's where Armstrong's biggest weakness in triathlon -- running -- was apparent. By Mile 7, Potts had cut the gap to just 40 seconds, and at Mile 8, he took the lead back from Armstrong. Poulat eventually caught and passed Armstrong around the 9.5-mile mark.

But unlike Ironman 70.3 Texas, where Armstrong faded the final few miles and finished seventh, he was able to hold on to third place for a spot on the podium in St. Croix.

Armstrong's next scheduled race is Ironman 70.3 Florida, on May 20.
